Dustin Hoffman stars as Benjamin Braddock, a recent graduate who collected every conceivable honour on the way, yet for whom the real purpose of life and the future is an elusive and intangible concept. Easily persuaded into an affair with the predatory Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), Benjamin drifts along according to the demands of Mrs. Robinson until his parents “insist” he take her daughter Elaine (Katherine Ross) out on a date. Initially going through the motions, Benjamin’s soul is finally stirred by a flash of emotion from Elaine after he has purposefully humiliated her. Mrs. Robinson, however, is not amused. The film features a now iconic soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel and won a host of international awards including five BAFTAS, five Golden Globes and Mike Nichols an Oscar for Best Director.
