Steven (Dirk Bogarde, Victim, The Damned) is a professor at Oxford University. Stifled by his life of marriage and academia, he finds himself drawn to Anna (Jacqueline Sassard) a beautiful young student who is already engaged to William (Michael York, Cabaret) another of Steven’s students. A shifting love triangle ensues, which seems destined to end in tragedy. Directed by Joseph Losey whilst in exile in Britain after being black-listed in Hollywood by the House of Un-American Activities Committee, Accident is one of three film collaborations with the legendary playwright Harold Pinter (along with The Go-Between and The Servant). Often acknowledged as the pinnacle of Losey’s distinguished career, the film is beautifully shot and features a complex and mesmerising central performance from Dirk Bogarde as the tormented Steven. Winner of the 1967 Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, Accident is a compelling and unforgettable masterpiece.
