A stylish Film Noir thriller in which Welles directs himself as Charles Rankin, a seemingly harmless school teacher working in a New England prep school and newly engaged to lovely Mary (Academy Award winner Loretta Young, The Farmer’s Daughter), daughter of a Supreme Court Justice. Rankin is in fact Franz Kindler, a Nazi war criminal keeping his true identity secret from colleagues, pupils and fiancée alike. Edward G. Robinson (Double Indemnity) stars as the uncompromising Nazi hunter bent on bringing Kindler to justice for his part in the Holocaust. Just before the wedding Kindler’s past comes calling in the form of war criminal Meinike (Konstantin Shayne), newly released by Wilson in a cat and mouse attempt to unearth Kindler. Murdering Meinike to maintain the charade, Kindler finds his carefully constructed identity start to unravel as Wilson determinedly closes in on him.
