Bombolini (Anthony Quinn, Zorba The Greek) is the resident and much-loved drunk and all round village fool in the small Italian town of Santa Vittoria. The town would be destitute save for one special commodity: it makes and exports beautiful wine all over the world. We are in the dying days of World War 2 and the fall of Mussolini heralds a bizarre chain of events culminating in Bambolini being acclaimed Mayor. His joy, along with that of his long-suffering wife (Anna Magnani) is short-lived, as German soldiers surround the town with the intention of financing their war effort with Santa Vittoria’s wine. Bambolini rises to the occasion and hatches a plot to conceal the million bottles, but his fails to convince Captain Von Prum (Hardy Krüger, Barry Lyndon) that the little wine they offer to surrender to him is all they have. And Von Prum intends to use every means at his disposal to retrieve every last bottle… Also starring Virni Lisi and Giancarlo Giannini. The film won the 1970 Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy.
