Frank Calder (Oliver Reed), an outlaw, is dissatisfied with his criminal, itinerant lifestyle and decides to try and better himself. So he kidnaps Melissa Ruger (Candice Bergen), a school teacher, and insists that she teach him how to read. Melissa’s wealthy husband Brandt (Gene Hackman) is a sadistic bully. When he discovers his wife is missing, he gathers a posse and sets out in pursuit. An epic chase ensues through the desert scrubland, but when Brandt finally catches up with his prey, will Melissa want to return with him?
