Synopsis:

MEDITERRANEO, Oscar Winner for Best Foreign Film, tells the story of a group of inept Italian soldiers who are sent to occupy a tiny, isolated Greek Island during WWII. Initially the island appears un-inhabited but when it becomes apparent that there is a small Greek population, and moreover that all the young men have gone to war, the Italians begin to view their assignment with more enthusiasm. Each in their own far-flung corner of the gentle paradise, the soldiers embark on magical and sometimes unusual love affairs, whose endurance is threatened only by the encroachment of the war raging in the seemingly distant outside world. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1991, Mediterraneo is a beautifully understated and wryly comic tale, the third in an unofficial trilogy from director Gabriele Salvatores following Marrakech Express and Turne.
