Synopsis:

For many people, Basil Rathbone’s portrayal of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes is the definitive screen version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s much-loved character. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce starred as Holmes and Watson in a total of fourteen films together, dating from The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1939 to Dressed to Kill in 1946. All fourteen of these classic titles will be available to own in a DVD boxset with re-mastered prints and bonus material. In 1939, Basil Rathbone made his first appearance as Sherlock Holmes in the Hound of the Baskervilles, directed by Sidney Lanfield for Twentieth Century Fox. Sporting the trademark deerstalker and pipe, Holmes sets out to uncover the legendary curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles amidst the moody, atmospheric landscape of the moors. The pair re-united as Holmes and Watson in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes this time with director Alfred Werker. In 1942 Universal decided to revive the Sherlock Holmes’ films, bringing back the successful partnership of Rathbone and Bruce in Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror, directed by John Rawlins. This time the films were re-vamped for modern audiences. The deerstalker was cast aside and Sherlock Holmes entered the twentieth century in this film set during WWII. Roy William Neill, described by Time Out as having ‘a gift for sinister atmospherics’, directed the following eleven Sherlock Holmes titles for Universal which include Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, Sherlock Holmes in Washington, Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman, The Scarlet Claw, The Pearl of Death, The House of Fear, The Woman in Green, Pursuit to Algiers, Terror by Night, Dressed to Kill.
