Synopsis:

Set in 1937, Jean Gabin gives an unforgettable performance as the suave yet doomed hero Pepe le Moko who dominates the criminal underworld of Algiers. Pepe has successfully evaded the French authorities by hiding out in the labyrinthine Casbah of Algiers, but he resents the oppressive atmosphere of his hideout, which has come to feel like a prison. When beautiful French tourist Gaby Gould (Mireille Balin) wanders into the Casbah, Pepe falls in love with her and decides to risk everything just to follow her out of Algiers. Described recently by the New York Times as ‘one of the most purely enjoyable films ever made’, Pepe Le Moko can be seen as a precursor to later classics such as Casablanca and The Third Man, and director Martin Scorsese championed the film when it was re-released in the States in 1996.
