Respected figure in a sleepy fishing village is the school mistress known as Mademoiselle, played by Jeanne Moreau. Though dignified on the surface, she is really as frustrated and introverted as it is possible for a neglected woman to be. Ettore Manni plays Manou, an Italian woodchopper who is sought after by all woman, disliked by the men, and secretly coveted by Mademoiselle. Villagers blame Manou for a series of bizarre disasters which, in reality, are caused by Mademoiselle. After a wild night of orgiastic pleasure with Manou, Mademoiselle tells the villagers Manou ravaged her. The villagers seek him out and lynch him. Mademoiselle, once again composed and tranquil, decides to leave this village for another.
