It’s World War II during the Blitz, and Nutbourne School For Boys becomes the scene of a hilarious battle of infuriated sexes as headmaster Wetherby Pond (Alastair Sim) learns that thanks to bureaucratic incompetence by the Ministry of Education, his sanctuary is to be invaded by a London girls’ school. Headmistress Muriel Whitchurch (Margaret Rutherford) arrives, implacable as a tank, and intending to make the best of it by taking over Nutbourne if possible. As Pond’s prospective new employers arrive to inspect the school, things take a turn for the worst as the parents of some of the St Swithin’s girls arrive for a tour at the same time, ensuring both pupils and teachers are engaged in a frantic attempt to hide the mix-up. Based on the popular stage play of the same name and with hilarious, standout performances by Sim and Rutherford, The Happiest Days Of Your Life was the unofficial precursor to the successful St Trinians series from the same director.
